Memoir Editing

A stronger manuscript, without losing your voice.

Whether you have a complete draft or a manuscript still taking shape, thoughtful editing can clarify the story, strengthen the writing, and help you see what the book needs next.

Types of Editing

The right edit depends on where your manuscript is now.

Editing is not a single service. An early draft may need structural work, while a nearly finished book may need close attention to language or a final check before publication. We assess the manuscript and recommend the level of editing that will make the greatest difference.

01

Developmental Editing

Big-picture editing focused on structure, narrative arc, pacing, themes, character development, and the balance between scene, context, and reflection.

02

Line Editing

Close editing at the sentence and paragraph level to improve clarity, rhythm, tone, flow, word choice, and the overall reading experience while preserving the author’s voice.

03

Copyediting

Detailed correction of grammar, punctuation, usage, spelling, consistency, continuity, and style once the manuscript’s structure and language are largely settled.

04

Proofreading

A final review of the designed pages to catch typographical, formatting, spacing, and layout errors before the book is printed or published.

I brought Diana the best manuscript I could produce on my own, and she made it dramatically better. Through developmental editing, she pushed me to go deeper, helped me sharpen the concepts, and was never afraid to challenge me. The book would have been far weaker without her.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of editing does my manuscript need?

That depends on the manuscript’s stage and its most pressing problems. An early draft may need developmental editing to address structure, pacing, narrative arc, or missing material. A more settled manuscript may be ready for line editing or copyediting. We review the manuscript and recommend the level of editing that will make the greatest difference.

Do I need developmental editing before line editing?

Not always, but major structural issues should generally be resolved before substantial sentence-level editing begins. There is little value in polishing chapters that may later be reorganized, rewritten, or removed. Some manuscripts are ready for a combined developmental and line edit, while others benefit from completing the work in stages.

Will you rewrite parts of my manuscript?

Depending on the scope of the edit, we may revise sentences, reshape passages, suggest new transitions, or provide examples of how a scene could be strengthened. More extensive rewriting can also be included when needed, but it is discussed and priced separately from a standard editorial engagement.

How do you preserve my voice?

The goal is not to make every manuscript sound alike. We pay close attention to your natural rhythms, vocabulary, humor, perspective, and level of formality. Edits are intended to make the writing clearer and more effective while retaining the qualities that make the voice recognizably yours.

Can you edit an incomplete manuscript?

Yes. An incomplete manuscript can often benefit from a manuscript assessment, developmental edit, or book coaching before the remaining chapters are written. Reviewing the work early can help resolve structural problems and prevent an author from spending months moving in the wrong direction.

How much does memoir editing cost?

The fee depends on the manuscript’s length, condition, complexity, and the level of editing required. After reviewing the word count, a sample, and your goals for the book, we provide a detailed proposal describing the scope, deliverables, schedule, and fee.

How long does an edit take?

A full-manuscript edit commonly takes several weeks, although the schedule varies with the book’s length and the depth of the work. Developmental editing generally requires more time than copyediting or proofreading. The anticipated delivery date is established before the project begins.

What will I receive?

Deliverables depend on the type of edit. They may include a detailed editorial letter, comments within the manuscript, tracked revisions, structural recommendations, chapter-by-chapter notes, and a follow-up conversation to discuss priorities and next steps.

Do you edit in Microsoft Word using Track Changes?

Yes. Most manuscript editing is completed in Microsoft Word using Track Changes and comments. You can review each suggested change, accept or reject edits individually, and see the reasoning behind larger recommendations.

Can you help me revise after the edit?

Yes. Some authors revise independently after receiving the edit. Others continue with book coaching, additional editorial review, or hands-on rewriting support. We can recommend the most useful next step based on the manuscript and the amount of guidance you want.

Do I need both copyediting and proofreading?

Usually, yes. Copyediting is performed on the manuscript before design and addresses grammar, punctuation, usage, consistency, and continuity. Proofreading occurs after the book has been designed and focuses on typographical, formatting, and layout errors introduced or missed during production.

Do you edit books other than memoirs?

Yes. In addition to memoir and biography, we edit narrative nonfiction, business and leadership books, thought-leadership manuscripts, and other nonfiction projects. The editorial approach is tailored to the genre, audience, and intended publishing path.
