Hiring a Ghostwriter

How Much Does a Memoir Ghostwriter Cost? A 2026 Guide

One service will write your life story for a few thousand dollars. An elite ghostwriter will charge two hundred thousand. Both prices are right because they are not selling the same book.

If you have just started researching memoir ghostwriters, you are likely looking at a bewildering range of prices. One service promises to turn your life story into a book for a few thousand dollars. Another quotes $75,000. An elite writer may charge $100,000, $200,000, or considerably more.

How can all of those prices be right?

Because you are not buying the same thing. Not even close.

Which is why How much does a memoir ghostwriter cost? is the wrong question. The useful questions are these: What kind of memoir do I want? How much work will it take? And what, exactly, will I be holding in my hand when the project is finished?

How much does a memoir ghostwriter cost in 2026?

As of September 2026 you have more options than ever, which is the good news and also the reason memoir pricing looks like chaos.

At the lower end, structured memoir services run a few thousand dollars. StoryTerrace, for example, currently lists its Classic package from $3,250, a PRO tier from $24,000, and custom quotes above that. They also offer an AI-assisted product that is under $2,000.

For a full-length, professionally ghostwritten memoir, prices climb quickly. Reedsy's marketplace data puts biography and memoir ghostwriting at roughly $18,000 to $50,000, and notes that while a novice may charge around $10,000, established writers run upward of $40,000. Writers it calls “superstar” ghosts can charge into the six figures.

Agencies go higher. Gotham Ghostwriters currently puts a straightforward memoir, business, or prescriptive book at $40,000 to $60,000; a more time-intensive book with a writer who has published with major houses at $75,000 to $150,000; and a collaborator with multiple New York Times bestsellers at $150,000 to $300,000.

Then there are companies that bundle writing with editing, design, publishing, and marketing. Scribe Media currently charges $56,000 for its Professional package and starts its Elite service at $135,000.

That is an enormous range. It becomes far less confusing once you look at what is actually being delivered.

A marketplace like Reedsy connects you with an individual ghostwriter. An agency like Gotham matches you with a writer and manages parts of the engagement. A full-service company like Scribe bundles the writing with publishing. And shorter, more structured services such as StoryTerrace sell projects with a set number of interview hours, a set page count, editing, design, and printed books. I recommend that latter model to people for whom it is the right fit. However, at this lower price point, there are a lot of unscrupulous and inexperienced actors out there. A $3,250 memoir and a $75,000 memoir are not the same product

Think about buying a house.

Two houses can have identical square footage and wildly different prices. One has original millwork, hardwood floors, and a beautifully renovated kitchen. The other is perfectly serviceable but basic. One has a pool and landscaped gardens. The other gives you a comfortable place to live and none of the extras.

Neither buyer is making a mistake. Maybe you want the crown molding. Maybe you would rather put the money toward your kids' education, an Eagles-green basement man cave — go Birds! — or something else entirely. The point is that square footage alone tells you almost nothing about why two houses cost what they cost.

Memoirs work the same way. Word count matters. So do the number and the depth of the interviews, the experience of the writer, the research, the narrative development, the revision, the editing, the photography, the design, the printing, and the project management.

Price is not a guarantee of quality. But price tells you something real about how much skilled human time a company can afford to put into your book.

What should you expect from a memoir under $10,000?

A lower-cost memoir can be exactly the right choice for someone who mainly wants family stories and photographs preserved. But the economics require tightly controlled scope.

In practice that means some combination of fewer interview hours, a less experienced writer, a shorter manuscript, a faster schedule, little photo curation or restoration, templated process and design, limited revision, and AI-assisted drafting, which is increasingly common across the industry.

None of that is necessarily bad. It is how an affordable memoir becomes possible.

What you do not get at that price is an experienced writer, expert interviewing, a long manuscript, multiple editorial passes, bespoke book design, custom trim sizes and heirloom materials, complicated family trees, restored and retouched photographs, extensive coordination with specialty printers, and white-glove service throughout.

If you don't want those things, don't pay for them. If you do want them, make sure you are comparing quotes for the same product.

What changes when a memoir costs $20,000, $50,000, or more?

A bespoke memoir, the kind we produce at Main Line Memoir, can take the better part of a year.

For a private family memoir, that may mean months of interviews, often with several family members and friends. The writing means taking the time to find the story inside all of that material: deciding what belongs and what doesn't, building a structure, capturing the author's voice, drafting, revising, and refining. It is the difference between a transcript and a story with a shape and a meaning.

Also, we often help our clients go through family photographs and letters, newspaper archives, business records, genealogy, old home movies, and boxes that have not been opened in decades. We can scan the material for our clients and restore damaged images or improve blurry ones so the finished book sings.

Then comes custom cover and interior design, expert proofreading, paper and binding upgrades, printer selection, production management, and delivery of the finished books.

A memoir intended for publication is a different kind of work. The writer has to build a book for readers who do not already know or love the author, which means thinking much harder about narrative arc, pacing, opening chapters, theme, positioning, competing titles, and what keeps a stranger turning pages. We also help authors position the manuscript for the market, develop a book proposal, identify appropriate agents and publishers, prepare query materials, and navigate the submission process.

What are you actually paying a memoir ghostwriter to do?

A substantial memoir may take twenty, thirty, forty, or more hours of interviews. The magic of the book is usually found in those conversations.

A good memoir interview does not simply establish what happened and when. It explores what the author noticed, believed, feared, wanted, misunderstood, and eventually came to understand. It surfaces the values the author most wants to pass down.

The most important material often arrives several conversations in, as one memory triggers another and the writer finally knows enough about the author's life to ask the right question.

That process is also how a ghostwriter captures voice. The art of ghostwriting is, at heart, the art of listening — learning someone's rhythms, humor, vocabulary, worldview, and peculiarities well enough to write prose that reads as recognizably theirs.

Then the ghostwriter has to turn dozens of hours of conversation and hundreds or thousands of pages of source material into a coherent story.

This is hard, skilled work. It takes experience, talent, discernment, and a great deal of coffee.

Manuscript ghostwriting versus a finished private memoir

This is the most important distinction to make when you compare prices.

Some ghostwriters deliver a manuscript. Our privately published family memoirs cover considerably more, which can include:

  • interviewing and research
  • ghostwriting
  • developmental and line editing
  • copyediting and proofreading
  • photograph selection and restoration
  • custom cover and interior design
  • paper, binding, and trim-size selection
  • printing
  • production management
  • delivery of the finished books

Not every project needs everything on that list, and some need more: archival research, genealogy, custom photography or video. You can see the range in our project portfolio.

Which is why a $40,000 quote for manuscript development cannot fairly be compared with a $75,000 quote that ends with beautifully produced hardcovers arriving at your door.

Ask: what will I actually be holding when this engagement ends?

How much does Main Line Memoir charge?

At Main Line Memoir we create bespoke private memoirs, family histories, and memoirs intended for publication.

More focused private projects (fewer pages, fewer images) begin at $18,000. Most full-length personal memoirs begin around $25,000, while ambitious, extensive, multigenerational, or archive-rich projects can reach $125,000.

For manuscripts intended for publication, full-service ghostwriting begins at approximately $1 per word. A commercial memoir typically runs 65,000 to 80,000 words, though some may fall outside that range.

Every project is scoped individually, according to the material you already have, the book you want to create, and how much professional support the project requires.

Why can an experienced ghostwriter cost $100,000 or more?

An experienced ghostwriter may give the better part of a year to a single book, and in that time make thousands of decisions.

Where should the story begin?

Which stories belong in the book, and which fascinating ones are quietly slowing it down?

What does the reader need to understand, and what can safely be left out?

Where is the emotional heart of this story?

Is the author avoiding something important — and does that avoidance serve the book?

When should a scene be expanded, compressed, moved, or cut?

Experienced ghostwriters also know when to push back. Sometimes the story that is uncomfortable to tell is the one that finally makes the book come alive.

At the highest level, you are paying for judgment, taste, and experience.

And once the manuscript is finished, an heirloom-quality private book demands another kind of expertise: designers, photo professionals, editors, and printers capable of making an object worthy of the story. A full-service memoir professional coordinates all of them. White-glove service exists to protect your time and your investment.

How do you compare memoir ghostwriting quotes?

Before you compare the numbers, compare the scopes.

How long will my book actually be?

A 20,000-word family memoir and an 80,000-word commercial manuscript are fundamentally different projects. Ask for an approximate word count, not a page count.

How many interview hours are included?

Four hours of structured interviews and forty hours of deep interviewing cannot produce the same book.

Who will actually write my memoir?

Find out whether you are hiring the person you met, a writer assigned later by a company, a larger production team, or a process that incorporates AI or other automated drafting tools. There is nothing wrong with any particular model, as long as you know what you are buying.

How much revision is included?

A first draft cannot be the final draft. Ask what happens after you read the manuscript and want changes.

What kind of editing is included?

"Editing" can mean almost anything. Ask whether the manuscript receives developmental editing, line editing, copyediting, and proofreading. Ask at what stage each one happens. A manuscript intended for commercial publication has fundamentally different needs from a privately printed family book, because it has to work for readers who have no existing relationship with the author.

Does the quote include design and publishing?

A manuscript is not a finished book. Ask about cover design, interior design, photographs, proofreading, printing, binding, shipping, and the number of finished copies included.

Who owns the work?

Your agreement should clearly spell out copyright, confidentiality, ownership of interview recordings and source material, and whether the writer may ever identify the project in a portfolio.

Is hiring a memoir ghostwriter worth it?

Only you can answer that.

If your goal is to get the memories recorded and a few photographs saved, a shorter, lower-cost service may be exactly what you need.

If you want a professional to interview you and the people closest to you, to find the narrative inside decades of experience, to capture your voice, and to produce an heirloom book made to be read and kept for generations, you are buying something very different. These are books that don't just pass down your stories, but preserve your values.

And if you hope to publish commercially, the standard shifts again. The book has to work not only as a record of your life, but as a story that says something larger about the world.

So before you ask how much a memoir ghostwriter costs, ask the more useful question: what kind of book do I want to leave behind?

Once you know that, the prices start to make a great deal of sense.

Not sure which kind of book you want?

That is exactly what a first conversation is for. We will talk through your material, your hopes for the book, and what the project would actually involve and cost.
